Chicago is the third largest city in the US, after New York and Los Angeles. Chicago is situated in the state of Illinois, on the south west shore of Lake Michigan. Many people know Chicago as the home of the famous American basketball team, the Chicago Bulls, for whom Michael Jordan played from 1984 to 1993. Others will know it as the home of not just one but two famous American football teams—the Chicago Bears, and the Chicago Cardinals.
One important reason for the importance of Chicago is the fact that it is at the cross-roads of North America, and is the center of a huge network of communications. Railway lines go from Chicago in all directions; it is connected with the vast Mississippi River by a ship canal, and the Illinois River. Chicago airport is also one of the business airports in the world.
Chicago is a very important cultural center, second only to New York. The Art Institute of Chicago, and its Museum of Science and Industry, are among the most visited museums in the world.
6. Los Angeles is the second largest city in the US.
7. Michael Jordan played for the Chicago Bulls.
8. There are two famous American football teams in Chicago.

阅读下面这篇短文。短文后有5个问题。请从每个问题后的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出正确选项。
An important question about eating out is who pays for the meal. If a friend of yours asks you to have lunch with him, you may say something like this, “I’m afraid it’ll have to be some place cheap, as I have very little money.” The other person may say, “OK, I’ll meet you at McDonald’s.” This means that two agree to go Dutch, that is, each person pays for himself. He may also say, “Oh, no. I want to take you to lunch at Johnson’s”, or “I want you to try the steak(牛排) there. It’s great.” This means the person wants to pay for both of you. If you feel friendly towards this person, you can go with him and you needn’t pay for the meal. American customs about who pays for dates(约会) are much the same as in other parts of the world. In the old days, American women wanted men to pay for all the meals. But, today, a university girl or a woman in the business world will usually pay her own way during the day. If a man asks her to dinner or a dance outside the working hours, it means “come as my guest”. So as you can see, it is a polite thing to make the question clear at the very beginning.

D. go to a cheaper eating place
13. “McDonald’s” here means _______.
A. a tea house
B. a gate
C. an office
D. an eating place
14. If you feel friendly to the person, _______.
A. you should pay for him
B. you needn’t pay for him
C. you can accept his invitation

The worst tourist in the world is Nicholas Scottie of San-Francisco. Once he flew from the U.S. to his hometown in Italy to see someone at home. The plane made one-hour stop to get oil at Kennedy Airport of New York. As he thought he had arrived home. Mr. Scottie got off the plane. He thought he was in Rome. Mr. Scottie knew very little English, so he asked a policeman the way to the bus station. He happened to meet a policeman who was also born in Italy and answered him in the same language. After twelve hour’s traveling round on a bus, the driver handed him over to a second policeman. He asked the policeman why the Rome police employed so many people as policemen speaking English instead of Italian. Mr. Scottie did not believe he was in New York when he was told so.
