When someone asks you to his or her home, it is very clear who is the guest and who is the host, but invitations to restaurants for lunch, dinners, coffee, a drink, etc., sometimes present problems, and the customs vary in different parts of the United States.
In many instances it is the inviter who pays, as one would expect, but in some instances each one pays his or her own check, you “go Dutch”. This is often the case with friends in informal situations, such as “Let’s go get a beer” or “Want a cup of coffee?” in some parts of the country. However, some people like to entertain friends by taking them to a restaurant for dinner instead of having dinner at home. In this case the host expects to pay and the guest may offer to leave the tip, which may be declined by the host. (If so, just let the matter drop.) If the invitation is expressed in fairly casual terms, such as “Let’s go to (name of restaurant) for dinner”, it may be more of a suggestion than an invitation, so you should be prepared to pay your part of the bill.
If you want to invite someone for a meal at a restaurant, be explicit: “I’d like to take you to …” Americans should be explicit also, but they often assume you know the local customs in the matter. Ask a friend’s advice if you are not sure.
6. The host-guest relationship is clear in the U.S. when someone asks you to his or her home.
7. “Go Dutch” means someone will pay for the meal.
8. When your offer to leave the tip is refused by the host, you should just leave the tip on the table.
9. If an American casually suggests “Let’s go to Quanjude for dinner”, it is expected that the American will pay the bill.
10. If you want to invite an American to a meal, you should make it clear.
Questions 11 – 15: Read passage 2, and then answer the questions by choosing the best answer from A, B, C and D. Write your answers on the Answer Sheet.
阅读下面这篇短文。短文后有5个问题。请从每个问题后的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出正确选项。
In a job interview, the first question is often a "breaking the ice" type of question. Don’t be surprised if the interviewer asks you something like: “How are you today?" or "What do you think of the weather lately?" Answer the question without going into too much detail.
Talking about qualifications is the most important part of any job interview. Your qualifications include your education and any special training you may have received in the past. Your qualifications also include your experience in any previous work. It is important to explain what experience you have in detail. Generally, employers want to know exactly what you did and how well you accomplished your tasks. This is not the time to be modest.
Try to avoid some big mistakes in the job interview, such as leaving the mobile on and criticizing previous bosses.
The worst thing is you yourself have no questions. Having no questions shows you are either not interested or not prepared. Remember that interviewers are more impressed with the questions you ask than the selling points you try to make.
11. The passage is mainly about ______________.
A. the typical questions asked in job interview
B. importance of interviewees’ qualifications in job interviews
C. some common mistakes found in job interviews
D. Do’s and Don’ts in job interviews
12. A "breaking the ice" type of question is ____________.
A. a question that makes people unhappy
B. an opening question asked to make people less nervous
C. a sharp question that makes people angry
D. a question asked about serious topic
13. All of the following are considered to be the interviewee’s qualifications except _____________.
A. educational background
B. social background
C. all kinds of special training received
D. experience in previous work
14. _____________ is not mentioned in the passage as a mistake found in job interviews.
A. Leaving the mobile on
B. Criticizing previous bosses
C. Having no questions
D. Arriving late
15. If an interviewee has no question in the job interview, it may show he ______________.
A. is not interested or not prepared
B. is modest
C. is familiar with the job
D. has good manners
Questions 16 – 20: Read passage 3, and then decide whether the statements are true or false. Write T for true and F for false on the Answer Sheet.
阅读下面这篇短文,短文后列出了5个句子,请根据短文的内容对每个句子做出判断。如果该句提供的是正确信息,请在答题卷上写T; 如果该句提供的是错误信息,请在答题卷上写F。
The Titanic is the name of the famous ship which sank in the Atlantic Ocean in 1912, drowning 1,490 people, after crashing in to an iceberg. Most people have seen the film Titanic, starring Kate Winslett and Leonardo DiCaprio. Anyone who has seen the film will enjoy this book by Eric Kentley. This book is called Discover the Titanic, and although it is written for children, any adults will enjoy reading it.
Beautifully illustrated with photographs, drawings and diagrams, the book shows how one might go down deep into the bottom of the sea to find the wrecked ship, and obtain some of the wonderful things that went down with it. The cover gives us a good idea of what is inside the book. For example, if you study the diagram on the cover, you will see how the ship sank--and, as it did so, broke into two parts because of the weight of the back section.
Give this book to your child as a present--and you will both enjoy making the model that comes with this book as an added extra!
16. The book is about making the film Titanic.
17. The book is written for both children and adults.
18. The book contains many pictures and drawing.
19. The book shows how the sunken ship might be found and valuable things on it can be brought back.
20. The diagram on the cover shows how the ship hit an iceberg.
