2.[完型填空] The Chinese divide the subjects of painting 61 four principal classes—Landscape, Man and Objects, Flowers and Birds, and Plants and Insects. The second class, Man and Objects, must be 62 principally as concerning man, his works, his belongings, and, in a general 63 , all things created by the hand of man, in combination with landscape. This was the convention in early times when the first painters whose artistic purpose can be formulated 64 certainty, portrayed the history of the legendary beings of Taoism, ——the genii and fairies dwelling amidst an imaginary Nature. The records tell us, 65 , that the early masters painted portraits, but it was at a later period that Man and Objects composed a class distinct from Landscape, a period responsible 66 those ancestral portraits painted after death, which are almost always attributable to ordinary artisans. Earlier they endeavored to apply to figure painting the methods, technique and laws 67 for an ensemble in which the thought of nature predominated. Special rules 68   on this subject are sometimes found of a very early date but there is no indication that they were collected into a definite system until the end of the seventeenth century. 69 to the present time our only knowledge of their content is through a small treatise published 70 the beginning of the nineteenth century.

3.[完型填空] Misunderstandings are inevitable (不可避免的) in communication. If such misfortune 61, what is your response? Here are some 62 for responding properly. First, 63 yourself down when you feel you are 64. It is natural to become bitter when being misunderstood, but the truth is that anger does nothing to 65 the misunderstanding. So try to 66 calm and think what lies behind the mistake and how to 67 rid of it. Second, take a positive attitude toward misunderstanding. Instead of resentment (愤恨), you should 68 the problem to the person who misunderstood you. Be patient and objective, and in most cases you will find reconciliation (和解) for you and your friend to each other. Last but not the least, try to find the reason of misunderstanding in communication. For example, if the conversation occurs between people coming from different countries, the way to 69 with the misunderstanding is to notice the different backgrounds. Because you now 70 that understanding can and should be reestablished, you can take some the previously mentioned measures when you are misunderstood.

4.[完型填空] In a telephone survey of more than 2,000 adults, 21% said they believed the sun revolved (旋转) around the earth. An additional 7% did not know which revolved around 61 I have no doubt that virtually all of these people were 62 in school that the earth revolves around the sun; 63 may even have written it on a test. But they never altered their incorrect mental models of planetary (行星的) 64 because their everyday observations didn’t support what their teachers told them: People see the sun “moving” across the sky as morning turns to night, and the earth seems stationary (静止的) 65 that is happening.

Students can learn the right answers 66 heart in class, and yet never combined them 67 their working models of the world. The objectively correct answer the professor gives and the student’s personal understanding of the world can 68 side by side, each unaffected by the other.

Outside of class, the student continues to use the personal model because it has always worked well 69 that circumstance. Unless professors address specific errors in students’ personal models of the world, students are not likely to replace them with the 70 one.

5.[完型填空] History appears to have provided many examples of whether war has eventually resulting in peace, this perception is an error. The end of war does not bring peace; it just brings about the end of 61. This confusion in defining the result of 62 a war as an indication of peace can be corrected by being willing to see things 63 and more clearly.

Being at peace is not just a ceasing of hostilities, 64 a characteristic of how you live and how you treat others within the world. Being at peace is more than not engaging in war. Being at peace is 65 embracing (拥抱) and extending peace by being peaceful and pursuing peaceful methods of existence. When we are not doing so, we are not at peace, 66 there is an active war underway or not.

There are almost endless examples for us to think war was necessary in our past 67 bring about peace and it’s hard to understand how we could have survived without engaging 68 war to either protect ourselves 69 gain something we valued or believed we needed. This method of thinking only exists because we go far, far out of our way to not see 70 there is always a peaceful solution.

6.[完型填空] Have you ever seen a rainbow in the sky? Do you know 61 it is?

A story says that when you see a rainbow, you should 62 at once to the place where it touches the ground, 63 there you would find a full bag of gold. Of course, it is not 64. You could not find the bag of gold, nor could you ever find the rainbow’s end. No matter how 65 you run, it always seems further away. However, you can appreciate its beauty no matter where you are as long as you can see it. It treats everyone fairly.

A rainbow is not a thing 66 we can feel with our hands. We know it is only the effect of light shining on raindrops. It is called a rainbow perhaps because it is 67 raindrops and looks 68 a bow. That is why we can never see a rainbow in a clear 69. Every rainbow has seven colors that occur in the same 70. The first of the top color is always red and the last is violet. A rainbow is indeed one of the wonders of nature.

9.[完型填空] The idea of becoming a writer came to me 61 my childhood in Belleville, but it 62 until my third year in high school that the possibility came into 63 . Until then I’d been bored by everything associated 64 English courses. I found English grammar dull and difficult. I hated the assignments to turn out long, 65 paragraphs that were agony for teachers to read and for me to write.

When our class was assigned to Mr. Fleagle for third-year English, I anticipated another cheerless year in that most tedious subject. He had a primly pointed jaw, a primly straight nose, and a prim manner of speaking that was 69 correct and gentlemanly 70 he seemed a comic antique.

41.[阅读理解] It is not unusual today for old people to spoil their grandchildren with toys and sweets and to yield to their aggressive demands. It is natural that old people adore their grandchildren, but it is not normal that this adoration should go so far as to create little emperors and empresses. Such adoration has a negative effect on the children’s personalities and moral standards.

A survey of 152 such families found that 88 percent of grandparents admitted that they tended to yield to their grandchildren’s every request, especially if the children had resorted to tears.

It seems that when children are told off by their parents and their teachers, their elder relatives interfere, protecting and comforting the children. When the children are required to do some family chore, 59 percent of the old people said they would invariably do it for them. Some grandparents would even go to school to sweep floors and wash windows for their grandchildren.

It has become usual that when little boys and girls get good marks in examinations, their grandparents reward them. As a result, the children have come to take these favors for granted and have become less considerate towards others.

Parents and teachers have all appealed to old people to be sensible for the sake of future generations.

The problem of these spoiled children can be solved. First, parents and grandparents should understand that their task is to train the children to become both self-controlled and self-reliant. Second, young parents should cooperate with the old instead of leaving the grandparents entirely responsible to raise the children. And third, they should allow the children to be more independent.

1The words “emperors” and “empresses” (paragraph 1) refer to .
    A.future kings and queens

D.Grandparents can hardly do anything to solve the problem of these spoiled children.

42.[阅读理解] Today it seems perfectly natural for us to shake hands when we greet someone or say goodbye. But like so many things that we do without thinking, such actions at one time probably represented something.

For example, in primitive life the hand was probably a symbol of power and strength. The hand was used to fight enemies, kill animals, and make spears and implements. So when the hand was extended to someone, it could have represented good will, since it showed that the person was not armed or ready for fight

We know that the hand was an important symbol in early religion, probably as a mark of power. The Greeks prayed to their gods with raised hands. Presenting the hands palm to palm was at one time the way an inferior person paid respect to a superior one.

Among the Arabs,it was customary at one time to kiss the hand of a superior. Later on, polite Arabs began to resist the efforts of people to kiss their hands, and sometimes they would end up shaking hands as each tried to prevent the other from showing this mark of “inferiority”.

The early Greeks held out the right hand when they wished to show friendship to a stranger. So we can see that the hand, and what was done with it, was full of meaning to people down through the ages. And while we shake hands without thinking, we are really carrying on a custom that has been handed down to us from ancient times.

6The main idea of the second paragraph is that.

    A. the handshake didn’t mean greeting
    B.the handshake showed men’s strength
    C.the handshake showed men’s kindness
    D. the handshake showed nothing
7 Human beings first made their lives.

    A. by hunting
    B. by fishing
    C.by hand
    D. by farming
8Among the Arabs, at one time,.

    A. people kissed each other whenever they met
B.men kissed women whenever they met
    C. less important person kissed more important person’s hand
D.more important person kissed less important person’s hand
9Generally speaking, in different countries.

A.people shake hands in the same way
    B.handshake has different meanings
    C.strangers never have handshake
D.people only use handshake to show friendship
10The phrase “hand down” in the last sentence means.

    A.put down
    B. leave down
    C. give down
    D.pass by tradition
43.[阅读理解] Now, however, there are people who look for an immediate excitement from a risky activity which may only last a few minutes or even seconds.

I would consider bungee jumping to be a good example of such an activity. You jump from a high place (perhaps abridge or a hot-air balloon) 200metres above the ground with an elastic rope tied to you’re ankles. You fall at up to 150 kilometers an hour until the rope stops you from hitting the ground. It is said that about 2 million people around the world have now tried bungee jumping. Other activities which most people would say are as risky as bungee jumping include jumping from tall buildings and diving into the sea from the top of high cliffs

Why do people take part in such activities as these? Some psychologists suggest that it is because life in modern societies has become safe and boring. Not very long ago, people’s lives were constantly in danger. They had to go out and hunt for food, diseases could not easily be cured, and life was continuous battle for survival .

Nowadays, according to many people, life offers little excitement. They live and work in comparatively safe conditions; they buy food in shops; and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill. The answer for some of these people is to look for danger in activities such as bungee jumping.

11A best title for this passage is .
    A. Dangerous Sports: What and Why
    B. The boredom of Modern Life
C.Bungee Jumping: Is It Really Dangerous?
    D. The Need for Excitement

A.are trying activities such as bungee jumping
    B. are climbing the highest mountains
C.are coming close to death in sports
D.are looking for adventures such as traveling into unknown places
13 In bungee jumping, you.

A.jump as high as you can
    B. slide down a rope to the ground
    C. attach yourself to a rope and fall to the ground
D.fall towards the ground without a rope
14Nowadays people take part in dangerous sports probably because.

    A. they have a lot of free time
B.they can go to hospital if they are injured
C.their life is short of excitement
D.they no longer need to hunt for food
15 The writer of the passage has a attitude towards dangerous sports.

Do you have bright ideas? Do you have ideas for inventions that change society or, at least, make life easier for somebody? Perhaps we all do sometimes, but we don’t often make the idea a reality. Recently, in Britain, there was a competition called British Designers for Tomorrow. The competition encouraged .young people to carry out their bright ideas. There were two groups in the contest: Group One was for schoolchildren under 16; Group Two was for schoolchildren over 16. And there were eleven prize-winners altogether.

Neil Hunt, one of the prize-winners, was called “Sunshine Superman” by one newspaper writing about his design. It’s important when people study the weather to be able to record sunshine accurately. We need to know how many hours of sunshine we have and how strong it is. Most sunshine recorders only record direct sunlight. Neil’s is more accurate and this is very important for research into way of using solar power. With his prize of 100 pounds, Neil plans to carry on inventing.

You can do so much with animation. Look at Simon West’s idea for animated road signs. He uses pictures which appear to move as you go nearer to or farther from them. This isn’t a new idea. But it is new to use these pictures on road signs. “We found that people were more likely to see moving signs”, said Simon. So now, you can really see rocks falling, trains moving, horses galloping or a car falling over the edge of a cliff. Quite a warning!

The ideas in the competition were so inventive that we are surprised that British industry doesn’t ask more schoolchildren for suggestions. Perhaps this will be the start of “pupil power”!

46.[阅读理解] To us it seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But actually the umbrella was not invented as protection against rain. Its first use was as a shade against the sun!

Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, back in the eleventh century B.C.

We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing connected with its use: it became a symbol of honor and authority. In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by royalty or by those in high office.

In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as sunshade. And the umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece. But it is believed that the first persons in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans.

During the Middle Ages, the use of the umbrella practically disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late sixteenth century. And again it was considered a symbol of power and authority. By 1680, the umbrella appeared in France, and later on in England.

By the eighteenth century, the umbrella was used against rain throughout most of Europe. Umbrellas have not changed much in style during all this time, though they have become much lighter in weight. 47.[阅读理解] On a rainy day, you will see many streams of muddy water running down the slopes of a hill. The water is muddy because it washes away soil from the hill slopes.

Sometimes soil is blown away by strong winds. When the soil is carried away by water or wind, we say that the land is eroded .This is known as soil erosion.

Plants cannot grow on eroded land. There is not enough soil on eroded land to give them the things they need. Plants need water and salts from the soil.

We can do a number of things to stop soil erosion. This is called soil conservation

One way of soil conservation on flat, open ground is to grow small plants such as grasses. Their roots hold the soil tightly together.

Another way is to plant trees around an open field. Thus soil erosion by strong winds cannot take place. Rows of trees act as a very big wall.

Soil erosion on slopes can be stopped by cutting “steps” called terraces. Water carrying soil cannot run straight down the slope now. It has to run down the terraces. This slows down the flow of the water. Most of the soil in the water is left behind on the terraces.

There are some other ways for soil conservation.

31 On a rainy day the water running down the slopes of a hill is muddy because .

    A. there are no terraces on the slopes

“I just try it on, mother!” she cried, as she ran upstairs. Three minutes later, Emily’s cries brought her mother up. The dress was much too big for her. Emily was in tears.

“Take it back to the dressmaker’s,” Mrs. Bale said, “She must alter it tonight. Hurry now. Take it off and go.”

The dressmaker’s shop was closed. “CLOSED FOR ONE WEEK HOLIDAY” said a notice on the door. Fresh tears rose to Emily’s eyes. She ran home again to her mother.

50.[阅读理解] Last week as my husband and I were driving near the beach, we noticed a small house with a “For Rent” sign. We went onto the front porch and knocked at the door, but no one answered, so we walked down the steps and around to the rear of the house. There we found a small yard surrounded by a fence with an old metal gate.

Because the house was empty, we decided to take a look inside. We looked in one of the windows near the back porch and saw that the inside was dusty but in generally good condition. The walls and floors were in perfect condition. The only thing that needed repair was the ceiling in the kitchen, which had been damaged by some rainwater.

While we were looking, a neighbor came over to see who we were. The house belonged to him, so he was able to take us inside. There were a total of six rooms, and all but the kitchen and carpeting. The house was unfurnished, but there were still several pictures hanging in one of the rooms. In general, the house looked wonderful.

The landlord explained to us that the rent was $350 per month, due by the fifth day of each month, and that usually he required a deposit equal to one month’s rent. However, if we would repair the ceiling, he would not charge us the deposit. The idea sounded very good, so my husband and I went home to discuss things. We decided to take it.
