Passage 1
Most of us canfind 15 minutes or half an hour each day for some specific regular activity. Itmay be a free period or a regular wait, say in the queue for a bus or meal ---even while eating breakfast. One famous surgeon always made it a rule to spendat least 15 minutes on general reading before he went to sleep each night.Whether he went to bed at 10 pm or 2:30 am made no difference. Even if youcannot keep to this kind of discipline, it is a good idea to make sure youalways have a general interest book in your pocket. Don’t forget it should be abook which entertains you and the English must not be too difficult for you.
Nearly all “speedreading” courses have a “pacing”element --- some timing device which lets the student know how many words aminute he is reading. You can do this simply by looking at your watch every 5or 10 minutes and noting down the page number you have reached. Check theaverage number of words per page for the particular book you are busy reading. Well, this is difficult at first. A friend can help by timing you over a set period,or you can read within hearing distance of a public clock which strikes thequarter hours. Pace yourself every three or four days, always with the samekind of easy, general interest book. You should soon notice your habitualw.p.m. rate creeping up.

Passage 1
Betty and Harold have been married for years. But one thing stillpuzzles old Harold. How is it that he can leave Betty and her friend Joansitting on the sofa, talking, go out to a ballgame, come back three and a halfhours later, and they’re still sitting on the sofa, talking?
What in the world, Harold wonders, do they have to talk about?
Betty shrugs. Talk? We’re friends.
Researching this matter called friendship, psychologist LillianRubin spent two years interviewing more than two hundred women and men. Nomatter what their age, their job, their sex, the results were completely clear.Women have more friendships than men, and the difference in the content and thequality of those friendships is “marked and unmistakable”.
More than two-thirds of the single men Rubin interviewed could notname a best friend. Those who could were likely to name a woman. Yetthree-quarters of the single women had no problem naming a best friend, andalmost always it was a woman. More married men than women named theirwife/husband as a best friend, most trusted person, or the one they would turnto in time of emotional distress(情感危机). “Most women,” says Rubin, “identified at least one, usually more, trusted friends to whom they could turn in a troubled moment, and they spokeopenly about the importance of these relationships in their lives”.
“In general,” writes Rubin in her new book, “women’s friendshipswith each other rest on shared emotions and support, but men’s relationshipsare marked by shared activities.” For the most part, Rubin says , interactions(交往) betweenmen are emotionally controlled—a good fit with the social requirements of“manly behavior”.
“Even when a man is said to be a best friend,” Rubin writes, “thetwo share little about their innermost feelings. Whereas a woman’s closestfemale friend might be the first to tell her to leave a failing marriage, itwasn’t unusual to hear a man say he didn’t know his friend’s marriage was inserious trouble until he appeared one night asking if he could sleep on thesofa.”

Passage2
There is no doubt that man is a member of the animal kingdom. Anyonewho has thought about this fact seriously must have wondered how it has comeaboutthat man has achieved aposition so supreme(最高的) among the myriad(无数的) kinds of animal life. Two characteristics of man, in comparisonwith all other animals, that stand out above all others are the creation anduse of tools and the development and use of language. Since no other animalshave achieved these abilities, it must be assumed that man’s evolutionarydevelopment led to his capacity to create and use tools and to devise and uselanguage.
Once these abilities and practices evolved, they probably becamedriving forces in the further evolution of man. Those members of the specieswho become most proficient(精通的) in the fabrication of tools and in the command of language andthought would tend to survive and maintain their kind for good, at the expenseof those of lesser ability.
11.   Which of the following statements bestexpresses the main idea of the passage?
