Indian families had no last names. The Sioux Indians give individuals three or four names. The first name was given at birth. It showed the order of a birth into the family. Wenonah, for instance, meant “firstborn daughter”.
The second name, the honor name, was given to the child by a medicine man (有法术之人). It usually referred to the fine character of good deeds of one of the child’s ancestors (祖先). When he grew up, the person was expected to live up to this name. Otherwise, the person might not be called by it.
The third name was the nickname. It usually referred to something odd (临时的) that the person had done. It was hardly ever flattering.
The fourth name came the deed name. It was give n by a war chief after the person accomplished some good or extraordinary bravery. The name might be that of a fear –– inspiring animal such as Bear or Buffalo or that of a noble bird, such as Eagle, Hawk or Owl.

111.[阅读理解]The loss of biological diversity has become most spectacularly noticeable in extinction or decline of populations of large and well-known animals. Many animal species have become extinct since the 1700’s, among them the California grizzly bear (加得弗尼亚灰熊), the dodo (渡渡鸟), and the passenger pigeon (候鸽). Hundreds of other animal species are threatened. In North America, endangered species include the black-footed ferret (黑足貂), the California condor (秃鹫), the desert tortoise, and the whooping crane.  Most species in danger of extinction anywhere in the world are suffering from the encroachment of human beings. The Asian elephant, for example, has become an endangered species due to the expansion of the human population throughout its range in southern Asia. In Africa, the African elephants are being killed off for their tusks. Monkeys and other primates throughout the world are threatened by hunting, capture for medical use, and the destruction of their habitats. And the rhinoceroses (犀牛), lions, and other large mammals of the African savanna (grassy plains with scattered trees) compete for land and life with some of the most rapidly growing human populations in the world.  The loss of biological diversity is most severe, however, in the tropical rain forests. The forests of the tropics are particularly vulnerable to disturbance because the soils have a low capacity for retaining nutrients (营养). Most of the forests’ nutrient elements are held in the tissues (组织) of plants. When loggers (樵夫) and farmers destroy existing plant cover, the nutrients are washed from the land into streams, and the land itself becomes less able to support life. Destruction of these forests destroys the habitat of hundreds, sometimes thousands, of species---from such creatures as the howler monkey (吼猴)and indigo macaw (金刚鹦鹉), to less visible species of plants, insects, and microbes, many of which are not yet known to science.

Yet spot checks on Sunday at several of the nation's airports showed no major delays caused by the new security measures.  At the international terminal for Northwest Airlines at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, passengers waited up to 30 minutes longer than usual. Their bags were sent through giant screening machines and workers tore open taped boxes and searched through their contents before closing them up again.  Most travelers simply accepted stricter screening developed since the terrorist(恐怖分子)attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, before which only 5 percent of the roughly 2 million bags checked each day were screened for bombs.  The U.S. government has put an additional 23,000 people into airports to carry out the new order.  Sonny Salgatar, a 23-year-old college student flying home to San Diego from Chicago, was told by an airport officer after the first pass that one of his bags was "hot", meaning there was something he couldn't identify and he wanted to open the bag for an inspection.  The "hot" item turned out to be Salgatar's clothing iron.  "Listen, anything they want to do for security is OK for me," Salgatar said.
6 The new measure was adopted to guard against ____.
    A.terrorist attacks
    B.luggage damage

A.Major delays were caused after the security order went into effect.
B.Most passengers regard the new measure as necessary.
C.Passengers complain about longer delay at the airport.
D.There will be more and stricter security measures.
9 What was the attitude of Sonny Salgatar towards the security measure taken? ____
    A.He was annoyed.
    B.He had no objection.
    C.He thought it useless.
    D.He didn't worry about it.

113.[阅读理解]People do not analyze every problem they meet. Sometimes they try to remember a solution from the last time they had a similar problem. They often accept the opinions or ideas of other people. Other times they begin to act without thinking; they try to find a solution by trial and error. However, when all these methods fail, the person with a problem has to start analyzing. There are six stages in analyzing a problem.  First the person must recognize that there is a problem. For example, Sam's bicycle is broken, and he cannot read it to class as he usually does. Sam must see that there is a problem with his bicycle.  Next the thinker must define the problem. Before Sam can repair his bicycle, he must find the reason why it does not work. For instance, he must determine if the problem is with the gears, the brakes, or the frame. He must make his problem more specific.  Now the person must look for information that will make the problem clearer and lead to possible solutions. For instance, suppose Sam decided that his bike does not work because there is something wrong with the gear wheels. At this time, he can look in his bicycle repair book and read about gears. He can talk to his friends at the bike shop. He can look at his gears carefully. After studying the problem, the person should have several suggestions for a possible solution. Take Sam as an illustration. His suggestions might be: put oil on the gear wheels; buy new gear wheels and replace the old ones; tighten or loosen the gear wheels.  Eventually one suggestion seems to be the solution to the problem. Sometimes the final idea comes very suddenly because the thinker suddenly sees something new or sees something in a new way. Sam, for example, suddenly sees that there is a piece of chewing gum (口香糖) between the gear wheels. He immediately realizes the solution to his problem: he must clean the gear wheels.  Finally the solution is tested. Sam cleans the gear wheels and finds that afterwards his bicycle works perfectly. In short, he has solved the problem.

114.[阅读理解]A moment's drilling by the dentist may make us nervous and upset. Many of us cannot stand pain. To avoid the pain of a drilling that may last perhaps a minute or two, we demand the "needle"- a shot of novocaine (奴佛卡因) —that deadens the nerves around the tooth.  Now it's true that the human body has developed its millions of nerves to be highly aware of what goes on both inside and outside of it. This helps us adjust to the world. Without our nerves - and our brain, which is a bundle of nerves - we wouldn't know what's happening. But we pay for our sensitivity. We can feel pain when the slightest thing is wrong with any part of our body. The history of torture is based on the human body being open to pain.  But there is a way to handle pain. Look at the Indian fakir (行僧) who sits on a bed of nails. Fakirs can put a needle right through an arm, and feel no pain. This ability that some humans have developed to handle pain should give us ideas about how the mind can deal with pain.  The big thing in withstanding pain is our attitude toward it. If the dentist says, "This will hurt a little," it helps us to accept the pain. By staying relaxed, and by treating the pain as an interesting sensation (感觉), we can handle the pain without falling apart. After all, although pain is an unpleasant sensation, it is still a sensation, and sensations are the stuff of life.
16 The passage is mainly about____.
    A.how to suffer pain
    B.how to avoid pain
    C.how to handle pain
    D.how to stop pain
17 The sentence "But we pay for our sensitivity." in the second paragraph implies that____.

A.Indians are not at all afraid of pain
B.people may be senseless of pain
C.some people are able to handle pain
D.fakirs have magic to put needles right through their arms
19 The most important thing to handle pain is____.

B.to feel pain as much as possible
C.to show an interest in pain
    D.to accept the pain reluctantly
20 The author's attitude towards pain is____.

115.[阅读理解]We get energy from the foods we eat. Our food supplies energy to keep our organs working. Our food also supplies heat to warm our bodies.  The main energy foods are the carbohydrates (碳水化合物). These are sugars and starch (淀粉). Wheat and rice are rich in starch and many fruits and vegetables contain considerable amount of sugar. Sweets, honey and jam are also rich in sugar.  Like carbohydrates, fats are food that provides us with energy. Butter, margarine, certain types of fish, eggs, cooking oils and most red meats are rich in fats. Fats can be stored in various parts of the body as reserves of energy. Because fats in general are slowly digested, they satisfy hunger for long periods.  Proteins (蛋白质) are very complex substances. The body needs proteins for the growth of new cells and for the repair and replacement of old cells. Foods rich in proteins are essential to a balanced diet. Milk, some vegetables, meat, chicken, fish, cheese, grains and nuts are some foods rich in proteins.  A good diet will contain a variety of foods so that the body contains all the minerals it needs for good health.  Vitamins are necessary for the proper working of the body. If we eat a variety of foods, we can be sure of obtaining all the vitamins we need.  Water makes up about 70 per cent of the weight of the human body. The average adult needs about two liters of water daily to replace the water the body loses.
21 Of the following substances, which are not used as sources of energy by living things?____
    A.Starches
    B.Vitamins
    C.Proteins
    D.Fats
22 If equal weight of the following substances is “burned” in the body, the largest amount of energy is produced by____.
    A.carbohydrates
    B.fats
    C.vitamins
    D.mineral salts
23 A boy grows five centimeters a year. The new material in his body has been built mainly from food called____.
    A.fats

116.[阅读理解]There was a time when, if a lady got onto a crowded bus or train, a gentleman would immediately stand up and offer her his seat. Today a gentleman will probably look out of the window or hide behind his newspaper. Either way, the lady will have to stand until someone gets off.
You can’t entirely blame men for this change in manners. The days are gone when women could be treated as the weaker sex. A whole generation of women has grown up demanding equality with men; not just equality in jobs or education, but in social attitudes. Hold a door open for some women and you’re likely to get an angry lecture on treating women as inferiors, unable to open doors for themselves. Take a girl out for a meal and she’ll probably insist on paying her share of the bill.    It’s no wonder, then, that men have given up some of the gestures of politeness and consideration which they used to show towards women. On the other hand, man’s politeness is perhaps slowly being replaced by true consideration for the needs and feelings of women, so that men can see women as equal human beings.
26 What do gentlemen now do when a lady gets on a crowded bus or train? ( )
    A.
They will stand up reluctantly.
    B.
They will offer her their seats after a while.
    C.
They will pretend not to see her.
    D.  They will get off the bus
27 Which of the following statements is true? ( )
    A.
Men have become less and less polite to women.
    B.
The women are thought of as the weaker sex.
    C.
The women could not open doors for themselves.
    D.  Men’s attitudes towards women are reasonable
28 Why are some women likely to get angry is a man holds the door open for them? ( )
    A.
Because the man should not hold the door open.
    B.
Because they think they are looked down upon.
    C.
Because they are treated too politely.
    D.  Because men often offend women in this manner.
29 What is replacing men’s gestures of politeness? ( )
    A.
More graceful politeness towards women.
    B.
More consideration for women’s needs and feelings.
    C.
More equal treatment to women in every respect.
    D.  More impolite gestures of social behavior to women
30 What can we learn from this passage? ( )
    A.
Men ought to make gestures of politeness towards women.
    B.
Women ought to make gestures of politeness towards men.
    C.
Women have achieved equality with men.
    D.  Men are beginning to treat women as equal human beings.

117.[阅读理解]There is a widespread belief that people who get on in life may be successful not because they deserve it, but because of influential friends or the right background. Sometimes it may just be a comforting and harmless belief, while at the other extreme it can be very destructive. I once met a brilliant young engineer who worked in a chemical plant. Because of her knowledge and experience, she should have been promoted to Production Manager. Instead, the job went to a man who was totally unsuited for the post. Everyone knew that he only got it because he was politically acceptable to his superiors. This injustice demoralized the young engineer and many of her colleagues. It also meant that the factory was much less efficient than it could have been.  All the same, we should not be pessimistic. More and more, the modern world depends on having people who are in the job because they are good enough, not just because their face fits. There is a story of a factory owner who sent for an engineer to see to a machine, which would not go. He examined it, then took out a hammer and tapped it, once. The machine started up immediately. When he presented his bill, the owner protested, "This can't be right! $100 just for tapping a machine with a hammer?" The engineer wrote out a new bill: "For tapping a machine, $1; for knowing where to tap it, $99."

B.her boss did not think she had the right qualifications for the job
C.the man who got his promotion was more experienced than she was
D.her bosses did not approve of her political views and opinions
33 The engineer who repaired the machine was right to charge $100 because____.
A.he was the only person who could find out what was wrong with it
B.the factory owner could not have repaired it himself
C.he hit the machine to get it started again
D.he was charging for his knowledge and expert skills
34 The author's attitude toward the widespread belief is____.

    B.negative
    C.neutral
    D.sympathetic
35 According to the passage, which of the following is NOT TRUE?____

118.[阅读理解]There has been a great deal of research into the art of negotiation, and, in particular, into what makes a “good negotiator”. One point most researchers seem to agree on is that good negotiators try to create a harmonious atmosphere at the start of a negotiation. They make an effort to establish a good rapport with their opposite member, so that there will be a willingness — on both sides — to make concessions, if this should prove necessary. Good negotiators generally wish to reach an agreement which meets the interests of both sides. They therefore tend to take a long-term view, ensuring that the agreement will improve, at least not harm, their relationship with the other party. On the other hand, a poor negotiator tends to look for immediate gains, forgetting that the real benefits of a deal may come much later. Skillful negotiators are flexible. They do not “lock themselves” into a position so that they will lose face if they have to compromise. They have a range of objectives, thus allowing themselves to make concessions, for example, “I aim to buy this machine for £2 000” and not “I must buy it for £2 000”. Poor negotiators have limited objectives, and may not even work out a “fall-back position”. Successful negotiators do not want a negotiation to break down. If problems arise, they suggest ways of resolving them. The best negotiators are persuasive, eloquent people, who select a few key arguments and repeat them. Finally, it is essential to be a good listener and to check frequently that everything has been understood by both parties.

And so people thought that each part of the brain does a different job. But modem research discovered that this is not so, for it is not easy to show exactly what each part of the brain does. In the past fifty years there has been a great increase in the amount of research done on the brain. Scientists have found out the way the brain works is not so simple as people in general may think. Chemists fell us that about 100 000 chemical changes take place in the brain every second. Some recent researches also suggest that we can remember everything that happens to us. We, may not be able to think of the things we have heard and seen, but it is kept there in the storehouse ( 宝库 ) of the human brain. Earlier scientists thought that is not true. As long as the brain is given plenty of exercise, it keeps its power. It has been proved that an old person who has always been active in the mind has a quicker mind than a young person who has only done physical work without using much of his brain.

124.[阅读理解]The sense of sound is one of our most important means of knowing what is going on around us. Sound has a wasted product, too, in the form of noise. Noise has been called unwanted sound. Noise is growing and it may get much worse before it gets any better. Scientists, for several years, have been studying how noise affects people and animals. They are surprised by what they have learned. Peace and quiet are becoming harder to find. Noise pollution is a threat that should be looked at carefully. There is a saying about it being so noisy that you can't hear yourself think. Doctors who study noise believe that we must sometimes hear ourselves think. If we don't we may have headaches, other aches and pains, or even worse mental problems. Noise adds more tension to a society that already faces enough stress. But noise is not a new problem. In ancient Rome, people complained so much about noise that the government stopped chariots from moving through the streets at night! Ways of making less noise are now being tested. There are even laws controlling noise. We cannot return to the "good old days" of peace and quiet. But we can reduce noise — if we shout loudly enough about it
67 Why are scientists surprised by the findings in their noise study? ( )
A.Because the world is becoming more and more noisy.
B.Because they have learned that noise is also a kind of pollution.
C.Because noise is an unwanted waste for human beings
D.Because people knew little about the danger of noise before.
68 What may be the result if we cannot hear ourselves think? ( )
A.We may forget what we have thought about
    B.Our thoughts may be interfered.
    C.Our mind may be harmed.
D.We may have difficulty using the right words.

B.in our modem society it is hard to lead a quiet life
C.the old days were much happier than the present time
D.it is impossible for us to deal with noise as we did before
70 From the last sentence of the passage we can learn that ( ).
A.we can put noise under control if our measures are effective
B.sometimes we have to shout loudly so that others can hear us
C.shouting is a chief cause of noise pollution
D.it is important to warn people of the danger of noise pollution
71 Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? ( )
A.Only recently did people realize the harmfulness of noise.
B.Noise pollution is the worst kind of pollution we suffer from.
C.People are now trying to find ways to make noise as low as possible.

125.[阅读理解]In July 1989, Dr. Fox and a team of scientists achieved a major scientific breakthrough. Fox discovered the gene (基因) that causes cystic fibrosis (膀胱纤维症) (CF). Many geneticists consider it ’ s one of the most significant discoveries in human genetics. The results of Fox work have helped scientists develop tests that identify carriers of the CF gene. They hope his research could cure CF. A test has been developed to identify people carrying the cystic fibrosis gene. The test is based on knowing where the gene is located. The CF gene is a recessive gene. This means a person can carry one copy of the gene and still not be affected by the disease. However, if this person has children with another person who carries the CF gene, there is a 25% chance that their children will inherit two copies of the gene and suffer from the disease. The test identifies whether parents carry the defective CF gene. Researchers are also using Fox discovery to find a cure for cystic fibrosis. They are working to produce a drug that will change the activity of the CF gene and also attempting to replace the defective gene with one that functions properly. It is difficult to produce a drug that changes the CF gene, but does not affect the 100,000 other genes of human. But Fox discovery has at least given a chance for the cure of the CF
72 A person with ( ) of a harmful recessive gene will be affected.
    A.one copy
    B.two copies
    C.no copies
    D.three copies

B.Fox discovery help scientist develop tests that identify carriers of the CF gene.
C.Scientist has already produced a drug to cure CF.
D.To produce a drug is not easy because it should changes the CF gene but not affect others
75 The word “recessive” (line 6) probably means ( ).
    A.hidden
    B.concealing

130.[阅读理解]The word “day” has two meanings. When we talk about the number of days in a year, we are using “day” to mean 24 hours. But when we talk about day and night, we are using “day” to mean the time between sunrise and sunset. Since the earth looks like a ball, the sun can shine on only half of it at a time. Always one half of the earth is having day and the other half night. A place is moved from day into night and from night into day over and over by the spinning (旋转) of the earth. At the equator (赤道) day and night are sometimes the same length. They are each twelve hours long. The sun rises at 6 o''clock in the morning and sets at 6 o''clock in the evening. For six months the North Pole is tilted (倾斜) toward the sun. In those months the Northern Hemisphere (半球) gets more hours of sunlight than the Southern Hemisphere. Days are longer than nights. South of the equator nights are longer than days. For the other six months the North Pole is tilted away from the sun. Then the Southern Hemisphere gets more sunlight. Days are longer than nights. North of the equator nights are longer than days. Winter is the season of long nights. Summer is the season of long days.
