二、阅读理解:【3道,总分:60分】

1. Sometimes you'll hear people say that you can't love others until you love yourself. Sometimes you'll hear people say that you can't expect someone else to love you until you love yourself. Either way, you've got to love yourself first and this can be tricky. Sure we all know that we're the apple of our parents' eyes, and that our Grandmas think we're great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics. but sometimes it's a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge, it is time you build a positive self-image and learn to love yourself. Self-image is your own mind's picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think. Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about US. Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be. Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world. The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day. Don't allow doubts to occur in it.It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you can't move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself. Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task. If you think you're silly because you aren't good at math, find a tutor. If you think you're weak because you can't run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you think you're dull because you don't wear the latest trends, buy a few new clothes. But remember, just because you think it doesn't mean it's true. The best way to get rid of a negative serf-image is to realize that your image is far from objective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive self-image. When you can pat(拍) yourself on the back, you'll know you're well on your way. Good luck!          (满分:)

2. It had been some time since Jack had seen the old man. College, carrier, and life itself got in the way. In fact, Jack moved clear across the country in pursuit of the dreams. There, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son. He was working on his future, and nothing could stop him. Over the phone, his mother told him, “Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral is Wednesday.” Memories fleshed through his mind like an old newsreel as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days. “Jack, did you hear me?” “Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. it's been so long since I thought of him. I'm sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago,” Jack said. “Well, he didn't forget you. Every time I saw him he'd ask how you were doing. He'd reminisce(回忆) about the many days you spent over ‘his side of the fence' as he put it, ” Mom told him. “I loved that old house he lived in,” Jack said. “You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man's influence in your life,” she said. “He's the one who taught me carpentry. I wouldn't be in this business if it weren't for him. He spent a lot of time teaching me things he thought were important. Mom, I'll be there for the funeral.” Jack said. Busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his hometown. Mr. Belser's funeral was small and uneventful. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away. The night before he had to return home, Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the old house next door one more time, which was exactly as he remembered. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture … Jack stopped suddenly. “What's wrong, Jack?” his Mom asked. “The box is gone,” he said. “What box?” Mom asked. “There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he'd ever tell me was ‘the thing I value most',” Jack said. It was gone. Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for the box. He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it. “Now I'll never know what was so valuable to him,” Jack said sadly. Returning to his office the next day, he found a package on his desk. The return address caught his attention. “Mr. Harold Belser” it read. Jack tore open the package. There inside was the gold box and an envelope. Jack's hands shook as he read the note inside, “Upon my death, please forward this box and its contents to Jack Bernett. It's the thing I valued most in my life.” A small key was taped to the letter. His heart racing, and tears filling his eyes. Jack carefully unlocked the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch. Running his fingers slowly over the fine cover, he opened it.Inside he found these words carved: “Jack. Thanks for your time! Harold Belser.” “Oh. My God! This is the thing he valued most …” Jack held the watch for a few minutes, then called his assistant and cleared his appointments for the next two days. “Why?” his assistant asked. “I need some time to spend with my son,” he said.          (满分:)

1. The biggest safety threat facing airlines today may not be a terrorist with a gun, but the man with the portable computer in business class. In the last 15 years, pilots have reported well over 100 incidents that could have been caused by electromagnetic interference. The source of this interference remain s unconfirmed, but increasingly, experts are pointing the blame at portable electronic device such as portable computers, radio and cassette players and mobile telephones. RTCA, an organization which advises the aviation(航空)industry, has recommended that all airlines ban(禁止)such devices from being used during “critical” stages of flight, particularly take-off and landing. Some experts have gone further, calling for a total ban during all flights. Currently, rules on using these devices are left up to individual airlines. And although some airlines prohibit passengers from using such equipment during take-off and landing, most are reluctant to enforce a total ban, given that many passengers want to work during flights. The difficulty is predicting how electromagnetic fields might affect an aircraft's computers. Experts know that portable device emit radiation which affects those wavelengths which aircraft use for navigation and communication. But, because they have not been able to reproduce these effects in a laboratory, they have no way of knowing whether the interference might be dangerous or not. The fact that aircraft may be vulnerable(易受损的)to interference raises the risk that terrorists may use radio systems in order to damage navigation equipment. As worrying, though, is the passenger who can't hear the instructions to turn off his radio because the music's too loud.          (满分:)
    1).?The passage is mainly about (    )(    ).
      A. a new regulation for al airlines
      B. the defects of electronic devices
      C. a possible cause of aircraft crashes
      D. effective safety measures for air flight
2).?What is said about the over 100 aircraft incidents in the past 15 years?
      A. They may have been caused by the damage to the radio systems.
      B. They may have taken place during take-off and landing.
      C. They were proved to have been caused by the passengers' portable computers.
      D. They were suspected to have resulted from electromagnetic interference.
3).?Few airlines want to impose a total ban on their passengers using electronic devices because (    )(    ).
      A. they don't believe there is such a danger as radio interference
      B. the harmful effect of electromagnetic interference is yet to be proved
      C. most passengers refuse to take a plane which bans the use of radio and cassette players
      D. they have other effective safety measures to fall back on
4).?Why is it difficult to predict the possible effects of electromagnetic fields on an airplane’s computers?
      A. Because it is extremely dangerous to conduct such research on an airplane.
      B. Because it remains a mystery what wavelengths are liable to be interfered with.
      C. Because research scientists have not been able to produce the same effects in labs.
      D. Because experts lack adequate equipment to do such research.
5).?It can be inferred from the passage that the author (    )(    ).
      A. is in favor of prohibiting passengers' use of electronic devices completely
      B. has overestimated the danger of electromagnetic interference
      C. hasn't formed his own opinion on this problem
      D. regards it as unreasonable to exercise a total ban during flight
2. About ten men in every hundred suffer from colour blindness in some way; women are luckier only about one in two hundred is affected in this manner. There are different forms of colour blindness. A man may not be able to see deep red.He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shades of green. Sometimes a person cannot tell the difference between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man may see everything in shades of green—a strange world indeed.In certain occupations colour blindness can be dangerous and candidates are tested most carefully. For example, when fighting at night, soldiers use lights of flares to signal to each other. A green light may mean “Advance” and a red light may mean “Danger! Keep back!”, You can see what will happen if somebody thinks that red is green! Colour blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called “cones”, These help to see in a bright light and to tell the difference between colours. There are also millions of “rods” but these are used for seeing when it is nearly dark. They show us shape but not colour. Wait until it is dark tonight, then go outside. Look round you and try to see what colors you can recognize.Birds and animals which hunt at night have eyes which contain few or no cones at all, so they cannot see colours. As far as we know, bats and adult owls cannot see colours at all only light and dark shapes. Similarly cats and dogs cannot see colours as well as we can.Insects can see ultraviolet rays which are invisible to us, and some of them can even see Xrays. The wings of a moth may seem grey and dull to us, but to insects they may appear beautiful, showing colours which we cannot see. Scientists know that there are other colours around us which insects can see but which we cannot see. Some insects have favorite colours. Mosquitoes like blue, but do not like yellow. A red light will not attract insects but a blue lamp will.         (满分:)

3. Young adult filmmakers all hope to show their works in international festivals like Sundance and Toronto. But what about really young filmmakers who aren't in film school yet and aren't, strictly speaking, even adults? They are at the heart of Wingspan Arts Kids Films Festival, tomorrow, in a setting any director might envy: Lincoln Center. Complete with “red carpet” interviews and various awards, the festival has much in common with events for more experienced moviemakers, except for the age of the participants: about 8 to 18. “What's really exciting is that it's film for kids by kids,” said Cori Gardner, managing director of Wingspan Arts, a nonprofit organization offering youth arts programs in the New York area. This year the festival will include films not only from Wingspan but also from other city organizations and one from a middle school in Arlington, Virginia. “We want to make this a national event,” Ms. Gardner added. The nine shorts to be shown range from a Claymation biography of B.B. King to a science fiction adventure set in the year 3005. “A lot of the material is really mature,” Ms. Gardner said, talking about films by the New York City branch of Global Action Project, a media arts and leadership-training group. “The Choice is about the history of a family and Master Anti-Smoker is about the dangers of secondhand smoke.” Dream of the Invisibles describes young immigrants' feelings of both belonging and not belonging in their adopted country. The festival will end with an open reception at which other films will be shown. These include a music video and full-length film whose title is Pressures.          (满分:)

二、阅读理解:【3道,总分:60分】

1. Radio and television are very popular in the world today. Millions of people watch television. Most people listen to the radio. TV is , of course ,more useful than the radio. On TV you can see and hear what is happening. This is especially important with international events. However , the radio is not disappearing . It is still with us. And the number of listeners becomes larger. One reason for this is the invention of the transistor( 晶体管) set. A transistor set is sometimes very small. It is very easy to carry about. You put one in your pocket when you go to work. You can listen to news broadcast or radio lessons on the bus. You can listen to them on your bike. You can put your own transistor set beside your pillow(枕头 ) when you go to bed. You can take it down to the beach or riverside when you go to swim. Besides , radio broadcasts are better for blind people. And the sight(视力 ) of many old people is not good enough to watch televisions , but they can always listen to music( in the fields, for example) on the radio. What's more , a television is rather expensive . Not every family can have one. But a transistor set is much cheaper. However , more and more people are buying TV sets. While you sit comfortably before the TV set in your own living room, you not only hear but also see what is happening in many places in the world.         (满分:)

      A. they don't believe there is such a danger as radio interference
      B. the harmful effect of electromagnetic interference is yet to be proved
      C. most passengers refuse to take a plane which bans the use of radio and cassette players
      D. they have other effective safety measures to fall back on
4).?Why is it difficult to predict the possible effects of electromagnetic fields on an airplane’s computers?
      A. Because it is extremely dangerous to conduct such research on an airplane.
      B. Because it remains a mystery what wavelengths are liable to be interfered with.
      C. Because research scientists have not been able to produce the same effects in labs.
      D. Because experts lack adequate equipment to do such research.

3. Long before the white man came to the America, the land belonged to the American Indian nations. The nation of the Cherokees lived in What is now the southeastern part of the United States. After the white man came, the Cherokees copied many of their ways. One Cherokee named Sequoyah saw how important reading and writing was to the white man. He decided to invent a way to write down the spoken Cherokee language. He began by making word pictures. For each word he drew a picture. But that proved impossible-there were just too many words. Then he took the 85 sounds that made up the language. Using this own imagination and an English spelling book, Sequoyah invented a sign for each sound. His alphabet proved amazingly easy to learn. Before long, many Cherokees knew how to read and write in their own language. By 1828, they were even printing their own newspaper. In 1830, the U.S. Congress passed a law. It allowed the government to remove Indians from their lands. The Cherokees refused to go. They had lived on their lands for centuries. It belonged to them. Why should they go to a strange land far beyond the Mississippi River? The army was sent to drive the Cherokees out. Soldiers surrounded their villages and marched them at gunpoint into the western territory. The sick, the old and the small children went in carts, along with their belongings. The rest of the people marched on foot or rode on horseback. It was November, yet many of them still wore their summer clothes. Cold and hungry, the Cherokees were quickly exhausted by the hardships of the journey. Many dropped dead and were buried by the roadside. When the last group arrived in their new home in March 1839, more than 4,000 had died. It was indeed a march of death.          (满分:)
