Some people remember things by writing notes to themselves. Then they leave the notes in obvious(明显的) places, such as on the table or on the floor in the middle of the living room. I don’t think I like to write notes to myself. Most of the time I lose them or forget to look at them until it’s too late. I prefer to use an alarm clock (闹钟) to tell me what I should do. I have some alarm clocks in my house. They could tell me about things. For example, if I have to make a telephone call at a certain time, I’ll set an alarm clock to go off a few minutes early and put the clock by the telephone. Or if I want to watch a certain television program, I’ll set an alarm clock at the right time and put the clock on the top of the TV set. I can remember almost anything if I use my clocks. However, sometimes an alarm clock goes off and I don’t know what it means. I always remember setting it, but not why I set it. If the clock is by the telephone, I know I may have set it to tell me to call someone. But I can’t be sure. I might have set it to tell myself that somebody was to call me at a certain time.

Without most people realizing it, there has been revolution in office work over the last ten years. Before that time, large computers were only used by large rich companies that could afford the investment. With the advancement of technology, small computers have come onto the market, which are capable of doing the work that used to be done by much larger and expensive computers, so now most small companies can use them.
The main development in small computers has been in the field of word processors, or WPS as they are often called. 40% of British offices are now estimated to have a word processor and this percentage is growing fast.
There are many advantages in using a word processor for both secretary and manager. The secretary is freed from a lot of daily work, such as re-typing letters and storing papers. He or she can use this time to do other more interesting work for the boss. From a manager’s point of view, secretarial time is being made better use of and money can be saved by doing daily jobs automatically outside office hours.
But is it all good? If a lot of daily secretarial work can be done automatically, surely this will mean that fewer secretaries will be needed. Another worry is the increasing medical problems related to work with visual display units. The case of a slow loss of sight among people suing word processors seems to have risen greatly. It is also feared that if a woman works at a VDU for long hours, the unborn child in her body might be killed. Safety screens to put over a VDU have been invented but few companies in England bother to buy them.
Whatever the arguments for and against word processors, they are a key feature of this revolution in office practice.

One silly question I simply can’t understand is “How do you feel?” Usually the question I asked of a man in action -- a man on the go, walking along the street or busily working at his desk. So what do you expect him to say? He’ll probably say, “Fine, I’m all right, ” but you’ve put a bug in his ear-- maybe now he’s not sure. If you are a good friend, you may have seen something in his face, or his walk, that he overlooked(忽略) that morning. It starts him worrying a little. First thing you know, he looks in a mirror to see if everything is all right, while you go merrily on your way asking someone else, “How do you feel?”
Every question has its time and place. It’s perfectly acceptable, for example, to ask “How do you feel?” if you’re visiting a close friend in hospital. But if the fellow is walking on both legs, hurrying take a train, or sitting at his desk working, it’s no time to ask him that silly question.
When George Bernard Shaw, the famous writer of plays, was in his eighties, someone asked him, “How do you feel?” Shaw put him in his place. “When you reach my age,” he said, “either you feel all right or you’re dead.”

The stock market, also called stock exchange, is a place where people can buy or sell shares(股票)of a factory or a company. And each share means certain ownership of a factory or a company.
Different people go to stock markets. Some are rich who want to get more money than they have. Others are not very rich, who buy stocks and try to become rich. Still others buy stocks as part of their plan to save money.

E-mail systems at thousands of companies and government offices around the world were attacked by a virus(病毒) called "Melissa" that disguises(伪装) itself as an "important message" from a friend. In spite of a weekend of warnings, more than 50, 000 computers at about 100 places around the world have been attacked by the virus, computer security experts said on Monday.
The virus began to show up last Friday and spread rapidly on Monday by making computers file off dozens of infected(被传染的)e-mails. Although the virus causes no serious damage to a computer, its effect was far reaching.
To make matters worse, a similar virus called "Papa" was discovered on Monday. Papa is programmed to send out even more infected e-mails than Melissa.
The Melissa virus comes in the form of an e-mail, usually containing the subject line "Important Message". It appears to be from a friend. The body of the e-mail message says, "Here is that document you asked for...don't show it to anyone else. "Attached(附) to the message is a document file.
Once the user opens that file, the virus digs into the user's address bookand sends infected documents to the first 50 addresses. E-mails from the Papa virus include an attached spreadsheet(电子数据文件)file. When the User opens that file, the virus sends 60 infected e-mails.
The reason why this is spreading so fast is that you are getting it from people you know. You should never open documents or attachments from people you don't know. People who get an unexpected e-mail with the "important message" subject line should delete it immediately and not open the message.
1. Thousands of computers were attacked by the Melissa virus ________.
A. covered with an important message
B. under cover of a message needing immediate attention
C. under the clothes of an important e-mail
D. with a beautiful coat

B. fire at many sick e-mail messages
C. send out scores of infected messages
D. burn with a fire because of many infected e-mails
3. After the attack by the Melissa virus a computer _________.
A. was slightly damaged.
B. became entirely out of order.
C. could not send out any e-mail any longer.
D. would have to be thrown away
4. If you opened an infected file by Melissa virus, the virus would ________.
A. damage the user's address book at once
B. soon spread through the user's list of address
C. let the first 50 addresses go out of the computer
D. change the user's address book in the computer
5. _______ gave one an attachment called spreadsheet file.

Never give out identifying information such as Name, Home, Address, School Name, or Telephone Number in a public message such as at a chat room or on bulletin boards. Never send a person a picture of you without first checking with your parents.
Never reply to message or bulletin board items that are: Suggestive/Obscene(下流的)/Ready to fight/Express intention to hurt/Make you feel uncomfortable.
Be careful when someone offers something for nothing, such as gifts or money. Be very careful about any offers that get you to meet or have someone visit your house.
Tell your parents right away if you come across any information that makes you feel uncomfortable.
Never arrange a face-to-face meeting without telling your parents. If your parents agree to the meeting, make sure that you meet in a public place and have a parent with you. It would be easy for someone to misrepresent himself or herself. Thus someone says that “She is a 12-year-old girl” could really be an old man.
Be sure that you are dealing with someone that you and your parents know and trust before giving out any personal information about yourself through E-mail.

I had just gone to bed after a very hard day when the phone rang. It was an eccentric(怪僻的)farmer. I had never met him before although I had often heard people talk about him. He sounded quite nervous and he had been talking for a minute or so before I understood anything. Even then all I could make out was that someone called Milly had had a very bad accident. I hadn't the slightest idea who she was but I obviously had to go .
It had been snowing heavily that day and I didn't know the way. I had been driving for at least an hour when I finally found his place. He was standing there, waiting for me. It seemed Milly had died. "She meant more to me than anyone …even my own wife!" he said. I could see that he had been crying. I thought something terrible had taken place, a possible scandal(丑闻). I was even more shocked when he told me he had put her in the barn(厩)."I wouldn't leave her out in the cold!" he said.
Milly had clearly been a secret lover of his. I was about to tell him he could not expect me to cover anything up when he opened the barn door. Advertising gives useful information about which products to buy. But modern advertising does more than gives news about products and services. Today's advertisements, or ads, try to get consumers to buy certain brands(品牌).
Writers of advertising are so skillful that they can sometimes persuade a consumer to wear a certain kind of clothing, eat a special kind of cereal(麦片), or see a movie. Consumers might never even want a product if they did not see or hear advertisement for it.
For example, you probably do not need the newest cereal in the supermarket. There are probably many cereal brands on your kitchen shelves. You may not have space on your shelf for another. But if you see ads about a new cereal that is your extratasty and has a free prize in the box, you may want it.
Advertising must get attention. To be effective, it must be exciting, entertaining, or provide pleasure. The secret of writing good advertising copy is to offer a good idea as well as a product. The idea is what the ad is really selling.
One example is an ad that says eating a certain cereal will make a person do well in sports. That cereal brand may sell better if consumers think it offers strength and energy.

China will soon put a person into space and become the third nation in the world to have manned spaceflight, a top Chinese aerospace(航空航天)official said on November 5.
A manned launch(发射)was not far off, Vice President Hu Hongfu of China Aerospace Science Technology Corp(CASTC)told a news conference at the third Zhuhai Air Show.“It will not be long before Chinese astronauts(宇航员)can ride locally-made spaceships into space, ”Hu said. The official gave no timetable but said it would happen “at the beginning of the 21st century.”
The former Soviet Union and the United States have been putting people into orbit since the early 1960s, but other nations have not considered the challenge(挑战)worth following.
China has already built and sent up its own satellites for communications and weather forecasting. The new communication satellites would help to encourage the country’s broadcasting industry, Hu said.
China would gradually close the distance between its country’s space industry and that of other nations. He added that they were willing to send up commercial(商业)satellites for Taiwan.
On China’s plan to send up manned spaceflights, Hu said China had made important development after the successful launch in November last year of the country’s first experimental spaceship, Shenzhou.“The whole project is in the research stage and a lot of work needs to be done, ”Hu said. “We need to have more tests of the unmanned spaceship.”

If you are in a town in a western country, you'll often see people walking with their dogs. It is still true that a dog is the most useful animal in the world. But the reason why one keeps a dog has changed. Once upon a time, a man met a dog and wanted it to help him in the fight against other animals and he found that the dog listened to him and did what he told him to. Later people used dogs for the hunting other animals, and the dogs didn't eat what they got until their master agreed. So dogs were used for driving sheep and guarding chicks. But now the people in the towns and cities do not need dogs to fight other animals. Of course they keep them to frighten thieves, but the most important reason is that people feel lonely in the city. For a child, a dog is his best friend when he has no friends to play with. For a young wife, a dog is her child when she doesn’t have her own. For old people, a dog is also a child when their real children have grown up and left. Now people do not have to use a dog, but they keep it as a friend, just like a member of the family.

April 1st is a day on which, in some countries, people try to play tricks on others. If one succeeds in tricking somebody, one laughs and says, “April Fool!”, and then the person who has been tricked usually laughs too.
On April 1st, a country bus was going along a winding road when it slowed down and stopped. The driver anxiously turned switches and pressed buttons. But nothing happened. Then he turned to the passengers with a worried look on his face and said, “This poor bus is getting old. It isn’t going as well as it used to. There’s only one thing to do if we want to get home today. I shall count three, and on the word “Three”, I want you all to lean forward suddenly as hard as you can, that should get the bus started again, but if it doesn’t, I am afraid there is nothing else I can do. Now all of you lean back as far as you can in your seats and get ready.
The passengers all obediently(顺从地)pressed back against their seats and waited anxiously.
Then the driver turned to his front and asked “Are you ready?”
The passengers hardly had enough breath to answer. “Yes.”
“One, Two, Three!” counted the driver. The passengers all swung forward suddenly and the bus started at a great speed.

What makes a person a scientist? Does he have ways or tools of learning that are different from those of others? The answer is "No". It is not a tool a scientist uses but how he uses these tools that make him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power is important to a carpenter. You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate, how to discover information, is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further: he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his question into a large set of ideas about how the world works.
The scientist’s knowledge must be exact. There is no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any change the scientist observes in a demonstration must be explained by the change in the conditions.
This is one reason that investigations are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the theory of relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics. The accuracy of his mathematics was later tested through investigation. Einstein’s ideas are shown to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurements. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations.

A. the importance of information
B. the difference between carpenters and ordinary people
C. the difference between scientists and ordinary people

C. does not allow any change even under different conditions
D. can be used for many purposes
3. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Scientists are different from the ordinary people.
B. The theory of relativity.
C. Exactness is the secret of science.
D. Exactness and way of using tools is the key to the making of a scientist.
4. From the passage we can conclude that a scientific theory ________.
A. can be repeated in testing
B. can be true sometimes
C. can be tested out under some conditions
D. can be wrong when different tool is used
5. How does a common person become a scientist?
A. Knowing how to do things.
B. Knowing why things change.

Many sports need the services of one or more referees(裁判).You will find, for example, referees in swimming, diving, football, skating, basketball, tennis and so on. The referee’s judgment, no matter what the sport is, can make the difference between winning and losing.
When a decision is announced, one can often hear loud cheering from the spectators (观众). Sometimes the people don't agree with the decision .Usually, however, no matter what the people think, the decision of the judge is final. With the instant replay television viewers often get a second chance to watch the special sports moments. Should the camera help the referees in making their decisions? Some people think so. The Japanese have been using the television instant replay in one of their sports for some time.
In Japan, where Sumo wrestling is thought by many to be the national sport, a wrestler named Taiho was trying to break Futabayama's record of 69 victories. In the 46 the match, Futabayama was declared the winner by mistake because the judges had not seen the wrestler's foot leave the circle.
Soon after the mistake, the people said that they had a right to see the match end with the correct winners since they had paid as much as $ 375 for a ringside seat. Now cameras record the actions of wrestlers .The camera is the most important referee of all. If a man or a woman makes a mistake in judgment, the camera will correct it, and the instant replay will let everyone know it. The right winner will win.
