三、长难句解析
1. Instead, we are embarrassed and shrug off the words we are really so glad to hear. （L23-24）
【解析】该句中需注意instead的含义
Instead意为“以。。。来代替”
It will take days by car, so let’s fly instead. 开车去要好几天呢，我们还是坐飞机去吧。
而instead of的意思则为“代替了。。。”，两者意思相反。
We sometimes eat rice instead of potatoes. 我们有时候吃大米，不吃土豆。
2. That’s why some of the most valued pats on the back are those which come to us indirectly, in a letter or passed on by a friend. (L26-27)
【译文】一些最宝贵的赞许鼓励之词往往是在信中或通过朋友间接传达给我们，原因就在于此。
【解析】该句为复合句， why引导表语从句，其中有which引导的定语从句，修饰those。注意该句的译法。
3. When one thinks of the speed with which spiteful remarks are conveyed, it seems a pity that there isn’t some effort to relay pleasing and flattering comments. (L27-29)

4. To give praise costs the give nothing but a moment’s thought and a moment’s effort---perhaps a quick phone call to pass on a compliment, or five minutes spent writing an appreciative letter.
【译文】给予赞扬只需要给予付出者片刻的思索和片刻的努力―――或者是很快地打个电话传递一句赞美的话， 或者是花五分钟的时间写一封感谢信。
【解析】动词不定式to give praise 做全句主语，句中破折号起说明作用，to pass on a compliment为动词不定式作后置定语修饰a quick phone call，spent writing an appreciative letter为过去分词短语作定语，修饰five minutes.
