The Number 13
One of our strongest taboos concerns the number 13.
It is perhaps our most deep-seated superstition; it would be difficult to find a Western-educated person (1)who did not fear or feel uneasy at the prospect of sitting 13 at table, or being allocated room 13 on the 13th floor of a hotel, and so on.
There are also superstitions attached to other numbers; even those master rationalists, the ancient Greeks, believed that all numbers and their multiples had some mystical significance.
Thirteen, as we well know, is regarded with great awe and fear.
The common belief is (2)that this derives from the fact that there were 13 people at Christ’s Last Supper.
This being the eve of his betrayal, it is not difficult to understand the significance given to the number by the early Christians.
In more modern times 13 is an especially unlucky number for a dinner party; (3)should this occur, it is believed (4)that one of the 13 guests will die within the year.
Hotels will avoid numbering a floor the 13th; the progression is from 12 to 14, and no room is given the number 13. Many home owners will use 12? instead of 13 as their house number.
Yet oddly enough, to be born on the 13th of the month is not regarded with any foreboding at all, which just goes to show (5)how irrational we are in our superstitious beliefs.

Community Service
The idea of helping people comes naturally to most of us. If we see a blind person getting off a bus, we watch to make sure that he is in no danger of falling. Members of a family help one another, with particular care for the very young and the elderly.
There are many people (6)who have nobody near to see their need for help and often nobody to give it even when the need is known. The old, the disabled, the homeless and friendless—these are the people for whom help may not come, (7)because nobody sees. It may not have occurred to you that you are in a position to help. Community service means helping the people around you. Organizations exist which try to make sure (8)that someone sees (9)when help is needed and does something about it. These organizations depend on voluntary help to carry out a wide variety of tasks, volunteers giving up a little of their spare time to lend a hand.
(10)If you wish to take part in this worthwhile activity, what sort of things would you do? Think of the people most in need of help and the ways in which help can be given. Much of the work of community service is concerned with the care of the elderly and the disabled. Old people cannot always redecorate their homes. Household repairs, cleaning, preparing food or taking care of the garden may all prove difficult. Elderly people with failing eyesight are delighted if a friend comes in to read or to write letters for them. A helping hand and a friendly face can mean a great deal to a lonely elderly person.
