Although the United States covers so much land and the land produces far more food than the present population needs, its people are by now almost entirely and urban society. Less than a tenth of the people are engaged in agriculture and forestry (林业) , and most of the rest live in or around towns, small and large. Here the traditional picture is changing: every small town may still be very like other small towns, and the typical small town may represent a widely accepted view of the country, but most Americans do not live in small towns any more. Half the population now lives in some thirty metropolitan areas (large cities with their suburbs) of more than a million people each ---- a larger proportion than in Germany or England, let alone France. The statistics (统计) of urban and rural population should be treated with caution because so many people who live in areas classified as rural travel by car to work in a nearby town each day. As the rush to live out of town continues, rural areas within reach of towns are gradually filled with houses, so that it is hard to say at what moment a piece of country becomes a suburb. But most and more the typical American lives in a metropolitan rather than a small town environment. For any Englishman, there can never be any discussion as to who is the world’s greatest dramatist (剧作家). Only one name can possibly suggest itself to him: that of William Shakespeare. Every Englishman has some knowledge, however slight, of the work of our greatest writer. All of us use words, phrases and quotations from Shakespeare’s writings that have become part of the common property of the English-speaking people. Most of the time we are probably unaware of the source of the words we used, rather like the old lady who was taken to see a performance of Hamlet and complained that it was full of well-known proverbs and quotations.
Shakespeare, more perhaps than any other writer, makes full use of the great resources of the English language. Most of us use about five thousand words in our normal use of English; Shakespeare in his works used about twenty-five thousand.
There is probably no better way for a foreigner to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language than by studying the various ways in which Shakespeare used it. Such a study is well worth the effort (it is not, of course, recommended to beginners) even though some aspects of English usage, and the meaning of many words, have changed since Shakespeare’s day.(4.0 分)6.  English people _______.A.have never discussed who is the world’s greatest dramatistB.never discuss any issue concerning the world’s greatest dramatistC.are sure who is the world’s greatest dramatistD.do not care who is the world’s greatest poet and dramatist(4.0 分)7.  Every Englishman knows _______.A.more or less about ShakespeareB.Shakespeare, but only slightlyC.all Shakespeare’s writingsD.only the name of the greatest English writer(4.0 分)8. What does the word “proverb” mean?A.Familiar sayings.B.Shakespeare’s plays.C.Complaints.D.Actors and actresses.(4.0 分)10.Why is it worthwhile to study the various ways in which Shakespeare used English?A.English words have changed a lot since Shakespeare’s timeB.By doing so one can be fully aware of the richness of the English language.C.English words are now being used in the same way as in Shakespeare’s time.D.Beginners may have difficulty learning some aspects of English usage.

大学英语(三)_2020春_02

April Fool’s Day is traditionally a day to play practical jokes on others, send people on fool’s errands(差事), and fool the unsuspecting. No one knows how this holiday began but it was thought to have originated in France. The closest point in time that can be identified as the beginning of this tradition was in 1582, in France. New Year was celebrated on March 25 and celebrations lasted until April 1st. When New Year’s Day as changed from March 25 to January 1st in the mid-1560’s by King Charles IX, there were some people who still celebrated it on April 1st and those people were called April Fools.
Tricks performed on April Fool’s Day range from the simple to the elaborate. Setting a roommate’s alarm clock back an hour is common. The news media even gets involved. For instance, a British short film once shown on April Fool’s Day was a fairly detailed documentary about “spaghetti farmers” and how they harvest their crop from the spaghetti trees. Whatever the prank, the trickster usually ends it by yelling to his victim, “April Fool!” April Fool’s Day is a “for-fun-only” observance. Nobody is expected to buy gifts or to take their “significant other” out to eat in a fancy restaurant. Nobody gets off work or school. It’s simply a fun little holiday, but a holiday on which one must remain forever vigilant(警惕的), for he may be the next April Fool!
Each country celebrates April Fool’s differently. In France, the April Fool’s is called “April Fish”. The French fool their friends by taping a paper fish to their friends’ backs. In England, tricks can be played only in the morning. If a trick is played on you, you are a “noodle”.(4.0 分)1.  April Fool’s Day was first celebrated in_________.A.EnglandB.AmericaC.FranceD.Rome(4.0 分)2. If you have been joining chat room conversations, or trading e-mail with net pals, you have become one of the millions who write in a special, short form of English.
Throughout the world, every night children and their elders are talking online---many of them are talking at the same time.
It’s fast: trying talking to six people once. It’s convenient: three or four words per exchange. It takes cleverness, concentration and quick fingers.
And it requires very simple language. There is neither time nor space for explanations. Why waste precious time telling six friends you have to leave for a moment to take care of your little brother when BRB (=be right back) will do?
Want to enter a conversation? Just type PMFJI(=pardon me for jumping in).
Interested in whom you’re talking to? Type A/S/L, the common request to know your pal’s age, sex and location. You may get 15/M/NY as a reply from your pal.
If something makes you laugh, say you’re OFT (=on the floor), or LOL (=laughing out loud), or joining the two into ROTEL (=rolling on the floor laughing).
And when it’s time to get back to work or go to bed, you type GTG (=got to go) or TTYL (=talk to you later).
People want to write as fast as possible, and they want to get their ideas across as quickly as they can. Capital letters are left in the dust, except when expressing feelings, as it takes more time to hold down the “shift” key and use capitals.(4.0 分)6.
If you get 15/M/HK as an answer to your A/S/L, it means ______.A.the person who is talking to you is 15 from Hong KongB.you are talking to a boy who is 15 years old and lives in Hong KongC.you are talking to 15 boys from Hong Kong at the same timeD.the boy from Hong Kong has been online for 15 minutes(4.0 分)10.According to the passage, time online can be saved by ______.A.using fewer capital lettersB.drawing picturesC.using the mouse instead of the keyboardD.using both the mouse and the keyboard

The comprehension passages on this course are designed to help you increase your reading speed. A higher reading rate, with no loss of comprehension, will help you in other subjects as well as English, and the general principles apply to any language. Naturally, you will not read every book at the same speed. You would expect to read a newspaper, for example, much more rapidly than a physics or economics textbook, but you can raise your average reading speed over the whole range of materials you wish to cover so that the percentage gain will be the same whatever kind of reading you are concerned with.    The reading passages that follow are all of an average level of difficulty for your stage of instruction. They are all about 500 words long. They are about topics of general interest that do not require a great deal of specialized knowledge. Thus they fall between the kind of reading you might find in your textbooks and the much less demanding kind you will find in a newspaper or light novel. If you read this kind of English, with understanding, at 400 words per minute, you might skim through a newspaper at perhaps 650-700, while with a difficult textbook you might drop to 200 or 250.    Perhaps you would like to know what reading speeds are common among native English-speaking university students and how those speeds can be improved. Tests in Minnesota, U.S.A., for example, have shown that students without special training can read English of average difficulty, for example, Tolstoy’s War and Peace in translation, at speeds of between 240 and 250 w.p.m. with about 70% comprehension. Minnesota claims that after 12 half-hour lessons, once a week, the reading speed can be increased, with no loss of comprehension, to around 500 w.p.m. It is further claimed that with intensive training over seventeen weeks, speeds of over 1000 w.p.m. can be reached, but this would be quite exceptional.(4.0 分)6. According to the passage, a higher reading rate of English depends on ______. A.a large vocabularyB.learning other subjects well besides EnglishC.a good comprehension of the reading textsD.different reading speeds for different types of texts(4.0 分)7.
