Howcan you find out what is going on inside a person’s body without opening the patient up?Regular X rays can show a lot. CAT scans can show even more. They can give athree-dimensional view of body organs.
Whatis a CAT scan? CAT stands for Computerized Axial Topography(层面X线照技术). It is a special X-ray machine that obtains a 360-degree pictureof a patient’s body.
Doctorsuse X rays to study and diagnose diseases and injuries within the body. X rayscan locate foreign objects inside the body or take pictures of some internalorgans if special substances as dyes or special liquids are added to the organsto be X-rayed.
ACAT scanner, however, uses a beam of X rays to give a cross-sectional(横断面的) view of a specific part of thebody. A fine beam of X rays is scanned across the body and rotated around thepatient from many different angles. A computer analyzes the information fromeach angle and produces a clear cross-sectional image on a screen. This imageis then photographed for later use. Several cross-sections, taken one afteranother, can give clear “photos” of the entire body of any body organs. Thenewest CAT scanners can even give clear images of active, moving organs, justas a fast-action camera can “stop the action”, giving clear images of whatappears only mistily to the eye. And because of the 360-degree pictures, CATscans show 3-dimensional views of organs in a manner that was once onlyrevealed during surgery of autopsy (examining a dead patient).
Toomuch exposure to X rays can skin burns, scanner or other damage to the body.Yet CAT scans actually don’t expose the patient to more radiation thanconventional X rays do. CAT scans can also be done without injecting dyes intothe patient, so they are less risky than regular X-ray procedures.
CATscans provide accurate, detailed information. They can detect such a thing asbleeding inside the brain. They are helping to save lives.
49. What is NOT TURE of a CAT scan?

Personal computers and the Internet givepeople new choices about how to spend their time.
Somemay use this freedom to share less time with certain friends or family members, but new technology will also let them stay in closer touch with those they caremost about. I know this from personal experience.

My working hours aren’t necessarily much shorter than they once were, but I spend fewer them at the office. This lets me share more time with myyoung daughter than I might have if she’d been born before electronic mailbecame such a practical tool.
TheInternet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends. Say youdo something fun see a greatmovie, perhaps and thereare four or five friends who might want to hear about it. If you call each one,you may tire of telling the story.
Withe-mail, you just write one note about your experience, at your convenience, andaddress it to all the friends you think might be interested. They can read yourmessage when they have time, and read only as much as they want to. They canreply at their convenience, and you can read what they have to say at your convenience.
E-mailis also an inexpensive way to stay in close touch with people who live faraway. More than a few parents use e-mail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with their children off at college.
Wejust have to keep touch in mind that computers and the Internet offer anotherway of staying in touch. They don’t eliminate any of the old ways.
