      二、阅读理解 (共5题,20.0分)
      1、
Jean-Michael Lourdis was a promising young pianist. But when the young man
played, it seemed to him, as if his hands were iron. He worried so much
about his playing that he became oversensitive(过度敏感的)to the comments of
his playing. Unfortunately, in those days, a critic(批评家)was not considered
a critic, unless he found something wrong. This attitude of the critics
would often leave the young man ready to give up his dream and return
home.
He was invited to play in Helsinki. The rich, the famous, the leaders
of State were all there. Jean-Michael had one of those days when
everything went wrong. That night as he played, he felt as if it were the
worst concert of his young life. The next day, in the newspapers, some of
the comments were so unkind. The young musician was painful.
That day, as he sat in his hotel room in total despair(绝望), there came
a knocking at his door. He had a visitor. The famous Finnish
composer(作曲家)Jean Sibelius had come by to congratulate the young pianist
on his performance. Jean-Michael asked how he thought of that and began to
quote some of the newspaper critics. “Hands of iron. No imagination.
Little skill, no joy. Don’t you hear what they say?” he asked.
Jean Sibelius looked at young Jean-Michael and said, “ Remember, son,
there is no city in the world where they have erected a statue(雕像)for a
      critic.”
1、According to the passage, Jean-Michael Lourdis _________. was a bad
        pianist
cared too much about what the critics had said
        refused to play in Helsinki
was praised highly by the critics
2、A critic in those days usually _________.   found fault with
        musicians’ performances
said kind and encouraging words to musicians
         helped musicians become famous
asked more people to go to concerts
3、 The young musician was painful because __________..  he was very
        strict with himself
        he didn’t trust himself
some of the comments were so unkind
he felt lonely in his hotel room
4、The comments mentioned all EXCEPT __________.  hands of iron
         no imagination
         little skill
         wonderful
5、Jean Sibelius came to visit the young musician because __________.  he
wanted to tell the young man the critics were right
he wanted to tell the young man not to lose his temper at that time
he wanted to tell the young man his performance was great
he wanted to tell the young man to respect the critics’ opinion

      2、
No one is glad to hear that his body has to be cut open by a surgeon(外科医生)
and part of it taken out. Today, however, we needn’t worry about feeling
of pain during the operation. The sick person falls into a kind of sleep,
and when he awakes, the operation is finished. But these happy conditions
are fairly new. It is not many years since a man who had to have an
      operation felt all his pain.
Long ago, operation had usually to be done while the sick man could
feel everything. The sick man had to be held down on a table by force
while the doctors did their best for him. He could feel all the pain if
his leg or arm was being cut off, and his fearful cries filled the room
and the hearts of those who watched.
Soon after 1770, Joseph Priestley discovered a gas which is now called
“laughing gas”. Laughing gas became known in America. Young men and women
went to parties to try it. Most of them spent their time laughing, but one
man at a party, Horace Wells, noticed that people didn’t seem to feel pain
when they were using this gas. He decided to make an experiment on
himself. He asked a friend to help him.
Wells took some of the gas, and his friend pulled out one of Well’s
teeth. Wells felt no pain at all.
As he didn’t know enough about laughing gas, he gave a man less gas
than he should have. The man cried out with pain when his tooth was being
      pulled out.
Wells tried again, but this time he gave too much of the gas, and the
man died. Wells never forgot this terrible event.
1、It is _______ since a man being operated felt all the pain a few more
        years
        not long
         few years
         two thousand years
2、Long ago, when the sick man was operated on,he ________. could feel
        nothing
        could not want anything
        could feel all the pain
        could do anything
3、Using the laughing gas, the people did not seem to ________.   be
        afraid of anything
        feel pain
want to go to the parties
        be ill
4、 If a man took less laughing gas than he should have when an operation
went on, he ________ felt nothing
        felt very comfortable
        still felt pain
         would die
5、One who took too much of the laughing gas ________.  would laugh all
        the time
        would die
        would never feel pain
        would be very calm

      3、
When I begin to look back on all friends whom I have had, I quickly came
to the conclusion that Jerry was the most important and had the greatest
effect upon my life. His family moved to my block when I was only 10.
Jerry was 15 at the time, but the fact that he was so much older than me
seemed to make no difference to him. I was very glad that he liked me. We
took long walks together, on which he would tell me stories he had heard
      form TV and radio programs.
But as months went by, a change came into our friendship. Jerry almost
stopped coming by the house, and every time I went to his house or
telephoned, he put me off with some excuses such as “I’m studying now” or
“I’ve got some jobs to do for Mum”. When we passed on the street, he would
still give me a warm smile and friendly wave with a “Hi, kid”, but he
would hardly ever stop to talk. Finally I realized that he was no longer
interested in me and that his taste had changed. I noticed him with a girl
once in a while and several times saw him going out in his family’s car on
a Friday or Saturday night. I simply couldn’t understand what was so great
      about girls and parties.
But I was hurt when he finally made me know that our friendship was at
an end. Of course he didn’t really mean to hurt me, but it was a long time
before I realized that it was an age problem that caused the break. There
were a world of differences between the ideas and interests of a
      17-year-old and a 12-year-old. Now that I’m over sixteen myself, I
realized this, and the hurt I got then has become happy memories of the
good times we were once together. I wonder if millions of other boys and
girls have had a similar experience.

A story is told about a soldier who was finally coming home after having
fought in Vietnam. He called his parents from San Francisco. “Mom and Dad,
I’m coming home, but I’ve a favor to ask. I have a friend. I’d like to
      bring him home with me.”
“Sure,” they replied, “we’d love to meet him.”
“There’s something you should know,” the son continued, “he was injured
pretty badly in the fighting. He stepped on a land mine(地雷)and lost an arm
and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to live with us.”
“We’re sorry to hear that, son. But, maybe we can help him find
      somewhere to live.”
“No, Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us.”
“Son,” said the father, “you don’t know what you’re asking. Someone
with such a handicap would be a terrible burden to us. We have our own
lives to live, and we can’t let something like this interfere with our
lives. I think you should just come home and forget about this guy. He’ll
find a way to live on his own.”
At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing
more from him. A few days later, however, they received a call from the
San Francisco police. Their son had died after falling from a building.
The police believed he had killed himself.
The grief-stricken(悲痛欲绝的)parents flew to San Francisco and were taken
to the city morgue(太平间)to identify the body of their son. They recognized
him, but to their horror they also discovered something they didn’t know,
their son had only one arm and one leg.

he had lost everything in Vietnam

      5、
People today all over the world are beginning to hear and learn more and
more about the problem of pollution. Pollution is caused either by the
release of completely new and often man-made substances(物质) into the
environment, or by releasing greatly increased amounts of a natural
substance such as oil from oil tankers into the sea.
The whole industrial process, which makes many of the goods and
machines we need and use in our daily lives, is bound to create a number
of waste products which upset the environmental balance, or the
ecological(生态的) balance as it is also known. Many of these waste products
can be prevented or disposed of sensibly, but clearly while more and more
new goods are produced and made complex, there will be new, dangerous
wastes to be disposed of, for example, the waste products from nuclear
power stations. Many people, therefore, see pollution as only part of a
larger and more complex problem, that is, the whole process of industrial
production and consumption of goods. Others again see the problem mainly
in connection with agriculture, where new methods are helping farmers grow
more and more on their land to feed our ever-increasing populations.
However, the land itself is gradually becoming worn out as it is being
used, in some cases, too heavily, and chemical fertilizers(肥料)cannot
      restore the balance.
1、 The main cause of pollution is         .  the release of man-made and
        natural substances into the environment
the production of new industrial goods

64 his wisdom and virtue(美德)to nobler deeds.
“65 good company, and you shall be one of the number,” said George
Herbert. “A man is known by the company he keeps.” Character makes
character in the associations of life faster than anything 66. This fact
makes the 67 of companions in early life more important even than that of
      teachers and guardians
Companionship is education, good or bad; it develops manhood or womanhood,
high or 68; it lifts the soul upward or drags it downward; it ministers to

Plymouth colony (殖民地), Massachusetts in October 1621.Thanksgiving did
not become a national holiday 68 1863 during the American Civil War.
In the United States, thanksgiving dinner is practically the same all
over the country. The table is always loaded with delicious food of many
different kinds. Naturally, the main course is turkey (a bird 69 to the

3、Enough sleep is important to health. The amount of sleep 61 depends on
the age of the person and the conditions in which sleep takes place. The
young may need more sleep than the old, but 62 eight hours are enough for
the health of grown-ups. Some can do with less than this amount but 63 may
need more. Every person knows his own need. It is then a matter of how to
satisfy it. Sleep should be always enough to make one relaxed and ready
      for 64 work.
Fresh air is 65 to sound sleep. It is not without reason for some people
to insist that it is practical to sleep in the open air 66 a person can
keep himself warm, out of door sleeping probably gives the body a most
      complete relaxation.
Ability to sleep is largely a habit. The conditions referred to only lead
to sleep. Out-of-door 67, a good habit of regular drinking and the
avoidance of late eating and 68 are all helpful to sound sleep. Such
factors are largely within the control of any person. A bath at 69,
neither hot nor cold but of body temperature, may be helpful to sleep.
Sleeping pills should never be taken except when suggested by 70.

4、Older people must be given more chances to learn if they are to
contribute to society rather than be a financial burden, according to a
new study on population published recently.
The current people approach which 61 on younger people and on skills for
employment is not adequate to meet the challenges of demographic (人口结构的)
change, it says. Only 1% of the education budget is 62spent on the oldest
      third of the population.
The challenges include the fact that most people can expect to spend a
third of their lives in  63, that there are now more people over 59 than
under 16 and that 11.3 million people are over state pension age.
“64 needs to continue throughout life. Our historic concentration of
policy attention and resource on young people cannot meet the new 65,”
says the report’s author, Professor Stephen McNair.
The major portion of our education budget is spent on people below the age
of twenty-five. 66 people are changing their jobs, homes, partners and
lifestyles more often than 67 they need opportunities to learn at every
age. For example, some people are starting new careers in their 50s and
      later.
People need opportunities to make a “midlife review” to 68to the later
stage of employed life, and to plan for the smooth transition(过渡)to
retirement, which may now happen 69 at any point from 50 to over 90, says
      McNair.
And there should be more money available to support people in establishing
a 70 of identity and finding constructive roles for the “third age”, the
20 or more years they will spend in healthy retired life.

5、How to love 61 English? Talk to people 62 English. This is a very simple
method, but it is very 63. You usually talk about things 64 interest you.
But the opposite is true, too. If you start talking about a boring
subject, you will begin to get 65 in it.
Imagine that you hate studying English. You have two 66: you can tell
everybody how much you are suffering 67 you can tell those people about
the things you''ve learned. If you choose the 68 option, you will only
feel worse. If you choose the second option, and start a conversation on
the "boring" subject, you will begin to look at it 69 a totally different
way. Suddenly it will become a subject worth 70 about-therefore, an
      interesting subject.
